National Economic Education Trust
Wealth through knowledge
Established 1991
Founded during the turbulent political climate of the early 1990s, NEET was established to support the educational progress of high-potential students from disadvantaged backgrounds, with a special focus on maths and science learners. Since 1991, the organisation has helped over 5000 young South Africans fulfil their dreams of a tertiary education, providing not just financial support but tutelage, monitoring and other assistance to ensure they reach their full potential. Many have excelled at their studies and gone on to become highly successful and influential players in their chosen careers. We identify promising learners with an interest in pursuing careers in the fields of science, technology, accounting, agricultural training and development. NEET offers bursaries for tertiary education, on-going support during their studies and even facilitates internships and job placement for them. The aim is to ensure the holistic development and ultimately the success of the students involved in our programme. We support people with disabilities. Innovative Approaches Started with an initial grant of R30 million from government, the organisation has disbursed nearly R44 million in direct financial support and bursaries to students over the past 21 years. Having been largely self-funded since that initial cash injection, NEET is currently seeking new partners to grow and continue their academic support and related activities, or to sponsor promising students as they embark on their chosen fields of study. What separates our offering from other similar educational trusts and grants is the ongoing and engaged interaction between the learners and their benefactors, made possible through a dedicated online communications platform known as the Student Management Portal (SMP). SMS is a web based incubator designed to profile, guide, manage and enhance the performance of all students involved in the NEET programmes. Leaders of tomorrow One of the reasons that NEET focuses on the areas of science, technology, accounting and related fields, is because the cost of tertiary education in these sectors is usually prohibitive for previously disadvantaged learners. The programme has proven over nearly two decades that given the opportunity however, young people from underprivileged circumstances can truly excel in these fields. Beneficiary Meshack Mokonotela was awarded a NEET bursary to study at the University of Natal, and repaid the faith in him by winning the prestigious Albert Luthuli Award for outstanding academic achievement during his studies. He is just one of literally thousands of leaders of tomorrow who have been given a head start by the passionate and committed team at NEET.
